Weep Sister Sing
Weep Sister Sing is a mixed media installation which responds to the mass incarceration and human warehousing of women and girls in U.S. jails and prisons today. Incarceration, serving as a form of institutionalized violence and oppression, renders those it imprisons invisible, powerless and voiceless. Weep Sister Sing specifically addresses the experiences of femme aligned people and makes physically present the devastating impact and scale of human caging on the incarcerated. Each face in the piece represents 138 of the 172,700 women and girls incarcerated as of 2023. This piece asks the viewer to acknowledge the traumatic experiences of abuse and violence that lead to incarceration for many, trauma that is further perpetuated by the criminal justice system.
